It started as an anonymous Facebook page in July 2015 posting daily Internet memes with a Newfoundland twist. Eight years later, the Newfoundland Turnip has amassed a following of over 250,000 from all over the world. The Turnip, as it’s called by fans, puts a Newfoundland spin on everything it shares online. Think of it as your modern-day Newfie joke book. Part comic book, part biography on the growth of a local Internet sensation, this book will take you through the journey of The Newfoundland Turnip thus far. Featuring commentary from some of Newfoundland’s local celebrities, this book will have you cracking up laughing while confusing you, offending you, and warming your heart like you’d just had a cup of tea in Nan’s kitchen—just like any basic cultural Newfoundland experience should.

Number 10 in The Globe and Mail Canadian Non Fiction bestsellers (Saturday, June 15, 2024)

"For something that is meant to be quickly consumed (“an ideal template has about ten words”), clustered together they allow a full volume look at an issue, and funny can be the sharpest way to make a point (people objecting to COVID vaccines because “they don’t know what’s in it” but still eating bologna sandwiches; social distancing and directional arrows requiring that a grocery trip Sobey’s be executed with Jason Bourne-efficiency)."-- Joan Sullivan -- The Telegram --

About Flanker Press
Turning pages since 1994

Flanker Press is a bright spark in the Newfoundland and Labrador publishing scene. As the province’s most active publisher of trade books, the company now averages twenty new titles per year, with a heavy emphasis on regional non-fiction and historical fiction.

The mission of Flanker Press is to provide a quality publishing service to the local and regional writing community and to actively promote its authors and their books in Canada and abroad.

Now located in Paradise, Flanker Press has grown from a part-time venture in 1994 to a business with eight full-time employees. In the fall of 2004, Flanker Press launched a new imprint, Pennywell Books. This imprint includes literary fiction, short stories, young adult fiction, and children’s books.
