Book 1 - Operation Wormwood

An elderly man is carried into the emergency Department of the Health Sciences Centre setting off a chain of events that leaves doctors mystified. He is the first of many victims suffering from severe nosebleeds and excruciating pain. Dr. Luke Gillespie and Nurse Agatha Catania investigate the symptoms but are unable to diagnose them. The only thing they have in common is Sgt. Nicholas Myra, an investigator with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Dr. Gillespie and Sgt. Myra join forces to solve this twisted mystery. The story takes a critical turn when Sister Pius, a nun from Mercy Convent, informs them about Wormwood: a disease she believes is created by God to kill perpetrators of the most heinous crimes. Wormwood becomes an international media storm when parish priest Father Peter Cooke holds a news conference on the steps of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist and announces that God has unleashed a plague upon the earth. Is God truly punishing these criminals, or is a serial killer targeting them? Dr. Gillespie and Sgt. Myra race to find answers, while the Roman Catholic hierarchy starts bringing people back to the Church in droves . . . by cashing in on what it claims to be a miracle.

Book 2 - Operation Wormwood: The Reckoning

Sgt. Nicholas Myra is back with a vengeance, and he is out for blood. Years of investigating horrific crimes have become too much, and Myra’s PTSD is intense and out of control. He can’t unsee the images that race through his dreams. Now as he investigates the biggest case of his career, he is in a constant state of fight-or-flight. The hunt continues for a serial killer who is targeting the most heinous of criminals, making them die a slow, painful death. Sgt. Myra partners with Dr. Luke Gillespie in a hunt to find a killer who is targeting criminals … who everyone wants dead. On the day of reckoning, everyone is called to account for their actions. Award-winning author Helen C. Escott, a former civilian member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, offers an exciting new voice in crime fiction and conducts a thorough investigation into why evil against the most vulnerable goes unpunished.

Book 3 - Operation Vanished

In 2018, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary executed Operation Wormwood, an investigation into a mysterious disease that targeted some of the worst criminals this province has ever seen.

At the same time, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were executing Operation Vanished, a special task force whose duty was to solve the historical murders of women and children.

RCMP Corporal Gail McNaughton has just transferred into the Major Crime Unit. As its newest investigator, she is given a stack of missing and murder files dating back to the 1950s. These crimes prove to be a challenge to investigate: most of the witnesses have died or aged, memories have faded, scenes were not secured to today’s standards, and DNA testing was not available at the time. Corporal McNaughton befriends Larry Morgan, an expert on Newfoundland and Labrador history who is also the son of one of the murdered women. Together they put together a list of suspects and begin to dig up ghosts from the past. McNaughton discovers that the files may be linked, and she sets out to prove her theory that a serial killer had been operating in rural Newfoundland when these crimes were committed.

Book 4 - Operation Trafficked

It is possible to get away with murder if you kill people whose lives are already devalued by society.

A spectacular murder in a downtown hotel of a sixteen-year-old girl brings together seasoned police officers Sgt. Nicholas Myra (Operation Wormwood) and Cpl. Gail McNaughton (Operation Vanished) in a Joint Forces Investigation. They quickly dive into a twisting, turning, breathless race through the $28 billion dollar business of human trafficking.

Myra and McNaughton put together a team of experts who explore this modern-day form of slavery, where women and girls are openly sold on the world’s markets. They discover a sophisticated criminal organization that operates with impunity due to vast corruption and hides in the underground hallways of power. They quickly learn it’s not the oldest profession but the oldest form of oppression. When the team learns a seven-year-old girl is up for sale, they race to find her before she is transported over the border and lost forever.

In her most thrilling novel to date, bestselling, award-winning author Helen C. Escott takes you on a lightning-paced, chillingly current criminal investigation that is surprising at every twist up to its astonishing conclusion.

Book 5 - Operation Masonic

The Lost Cathedral

The Freemasons' Most Worshipful Grand Master has been murdered. His body has been laid out in the ritualistic Chamber of Reflection at the Masonic Temple, surrounded by centuries of secrets. Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Insp. Nicholas Myra and Cst. Donna Whiffen dig through thousands of years of history, secrets, scandals, and symbols in a hunt for the killer. The search leads them back to the Temple of Solomon and the first Masonic murder.

Rumours abound of hidden tunnels under churches and buildings in the centre of old St. John’s which lead to an unbelievable treasure at the heart of an Ecclesiastic Circle—a treasure that many would kill for. This is the historical backdrop to Helen C. Escott’s engrossing and well-researched novel Operation Masonic. This thriller is exceedingly clever and compellingly truthful.

“The killer is always the one who is not getting what they want. Who must have what they can’t have,” Insp. Myra informs his team of investigators.

Operation Masonic is fiction . . . but steeped in truth.
