M is for Murals
An Alphabet Storybook
The year 2020 marks the Botwood Mural Arts Society's 10th anniversary and the launch of this very special publication. Through cheerful rhyme and colourful imagery, M is for Murals tells the story of Botwood’s murals, the artists who painted them, and the seaport town in Newfoundland and Labrador that supported their creations. This alphabet storybook is designed to be read aloud to children while engaging them in the rich provincial history the artwork portrays. Although written with children in mind, M is for Murals also works as a visual time capsule and will appeal to adults interested in knowing the details of the murals completed to date. The town of Botwood has now claimed the title “Mural Capital of Newfoundland and Labrador." As a long-standing member of the Global Mural Association and host of the 2018 Global Mural Conference, the Botwood Mural Arts Society believes in a creative economy and invites you to “Come See What We See!"

And b’ys, judging from the pictures in this book, those murals are gem dandy — Beothuks and doctors and nurses; soldiers and loggers and trainmen; youngsters and postage stamps and airplanes … … and books. My favorite mural accompanies L is for library. This Two Rs mural has eighty-eight books. A dozen or more of those books form one of the library’s corner posts. Others form stage heads with colored pencils shoring up hardcover deck planks. ...because I love books and could roll on the floor and behave unseemly among piles of them, this mural is my favorite and I bet if it should come to pass (Since, homebody that I am, the likelihood of my travelling to Central Newfoundland is questionable, even for a staycation) the library mural also would be my favorite in the flesh, so to speak. At the book’s end are thumbnail biographies of three of the people responsible for M is for Murals existence. B’ys, a big ol’ pat on the back for you(s). You know what? I especially like the calligraphy.-- Harold Walters - Life on this Planet... --
